JSON format and what is it good for?

I downloaded and installed the Blend4Web plugin for Blender.

Made a number of HTML files to display on a number of different devices, so far really cool stuff for a one button push.

What I was wondering is what is the export JSON files used for?

New to the whole Blender, 3D world so just wondering.

While ready-to-use HTML files are basically exported media coupled with the web player, JSON files are intermediates to be loaded and used in web applications. We got an awesome tutorial on this topic.
